• Carved Tableware •

Like all of Tim's tableware, each piece is thrown by hand on the potter's wheel. Once it has dried a little, the foot is trimmed on the wheel. Then the carving can begin.

For many years, Tim has used a small loop trimming tool to cut away at the rim of bowls and plates, creating a pattern reminiscent of mountains or fractals. Recently, he has started incorporating these methods into other forms, as well as adding the hand-carved patterns from his marble work to complement the natural feel of these edges.

After one firing in the kiln, they are ready for glazing. To enhance the bark- or stone-like nature of the carving, the carved areas are not glazed, but inset with iron oxide to give them a nice darker color and heighten contrast.
